Recycling

Many times, in our rush to keep our home clean, throwing away unused items seems easier than setting up a garage sale or listing the item for sale online. We get new television sets and refrigerators and kick our old ones to the curb. When we toss our old items to the curb, however, it just goes to the landfill.

Did you know you could recycle many household appliances, television sets, and even air conditioners? You could of course give working items away to family or a friend, but if they are looking to upgrade their TV’s and appliances, you may consider recycling. Listed are a few appliances that can be recycled as well as suggested ways to do-it-yourself.

Television Sets

There are over 300 million television sets in the United States, and too many of those are tucked away in basements, garages, storage, or some other area that leaves them unused and collecting dust. CRT televisions have a long lifespan which is why people store them away rather than selling or recycling it.

CRT, or cathode ray tube televisions, are composed of several pounds of lead, at least a layer of cadmium-based phosphorous, and other toxic heavy metals. Old generations of flat screen TV’s still contain other toxic materials.

Electronic waste, or E-waste is tough to dispose of and often illegal to just throw away for the landfills which makes a lot of sense.

Appliances

Appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, blenders, and the like fit into the same category as cans and bottles. Yes, these items can and should be recycled whether they work like a charm or are outdated and useless.

Pay attention to appliances that are broken, have frayed cords, or no longer unsafe. Anything that fits these or similar categories should be disposed of by recycling. New appliances are a great investment but you should ensure your old products are brought to the right “home.” Of course, this isn’t simple.

Some appliances are heavy to move. Most won’t sell at a garage sale or online (although it’s always worth a try). Thrift stores and non-profit businesses are another great place for donation. Recycling such products can create a better future for all of us.
